The Truth About HR and Company Culture: A Personal Reflection
There’s a statement that’s been circulating online, and it’s uncomfortable to hear: “HR is not your friend.” — Leila Hormozi At first glance, it sounds harsh.
The end of the year can be overwhelming for HR professionals, with tasks like finalising employee reviews, managing leave, and planning for the next year. While keeping things running smoothly is important, it’s equally crucial to take care of yourself to avoid burnout. Here are some self-care tips to help manage stress and stay healthy:
Break large tasks into smaller steps and create a realistic schedule. Tools like to-do lists and calendars can help you prioritise and stay organised, preventing you from becoming overwhelmed.
HR professionals are often hit with last-minute requests. Learn to say no when necessary and protect your time to focus on key responsibilities.
Short, regular breaks boost productivity and reduce stress. Step away from your desk, stretch, or simply take a breather every hour to reset your mind.
Incorporate movement into your day, even if it’s just a quick walk or desk stretches. Exercise reduces stress and improves both mental and physical well-being.
Mindfulness techniques, like deep breathing or meditation, can help you stay calm and focused, making it easier to handle challenges as they arise.
Don’t skip meals. Eat balanced, nutritious food and stay hydrated to maintain your energy and focus. Avoid overloading with caffeine, which can lead to crashes.
If you feel overwhelmed, reach out to a colleague or a professional. Talking through stress can bring much-needed relief.
Block out time for relaxation, whether it’s spending time with family, reading, or pursuing a hobby. Recharging ensures you return to work with renewed energy.
Take time to reflect on your accomplishments throughout the year. Recognise your achievements, big or small, and the value you’ve brought to your organisation.
Take charge of your self-care this season—start small, stay consistent, and watch how it transforms your productivity and happiness. By prioritising self-care, you can manage stress, stay healthy, and finish the year strong. Remember, a healthy HR team leads to a healthier workplace!
