The Truth About HR and Company Culture: A Personal Reflection
There’s a statement that’s been circulating online, and it’s uncomfortable to hear: “HR is not your friend.” — Leila Hormozi At first glance, it sounds harsh.
In today’s fast-paced and dynamic business environment, companies often face unique challenges, especially during peak seasons when demand surges. One such challenge is the need for additional personnel during what is colloquially referred to as the “silly season” which typically occurs between September and December.
In this case study, we delve into how a small logistics company was faced with various challenges and how we were able to offer a simplified, cost-effective solution through our labour-broking service.
The client, a leading producer and distributor of seasonal perishable items, faced a daunting problem. Every year, as the “silly season” approached—characterised by holidays and festive events—the demand for their products would spike. Historically, this meant scrambling to hire additional staff, often on a permanent basis, to meet the increased demand. However, this led to several complications:
High Overheads: The client incurred significant costs due to the salaries, benefits, and training for new permanent staff.
Operational Rigidity: Once hired, these permanent employees would often remain on the payroll, causing financial strain during the off-peak season.
Complexity: The hiring process itself was cumbersome, involving a significant administrative burden that distracted them from focusing on the quality and distribution of their products.
Desperate for a more agile and cost-effective solution, the client reached out to us for help.
Recognising the need for agility and cost-effectiveness, the client turned to us for assistance. We proposed a solution that involved recruiting a pool of about 20 candidates who would be readily available to step in with just a 48-hour lead time. This approach offered the client the flexibility to scale their workforce up or down as per the evolving seasonal demand, without the financial burden of permanent staff.
Implementing this strategy yielded several key results for the client:
1. Cost-Efficiency: By eliminating the need for permanent staff, the client reduced overhead costs related to salaries, benefits, and training.
2. Flexibility: The 48-hour lead time ensured that the client could adapt swiftly to changes in demand.
3. Scalability: The client could easily adjust the number of temporary workers based on the specific demands of the “silly season.”
4. Simplicity: Labour broking streamlines workforce management, freeing companies from the administrative burden of hiring, training, and managing permanent employees.
This illustrates how we successfully addressed the challenge of staffing. By providing a pool of on-demand talent, we enabled our client to simplify their operations, reduce costs, and maintain high-quality service during peak demand periods.
